  13. These image files have been produced by the Smithsonian 
  14. Institution's Office of Printing & Photographic Services, and 
  15. are made available through a generous grant from the Apple 
  16. Library of Tomorrow Program, under Project Chapman (named for 
  17. John Chapman, a.k.a. 'Johnny Appleseed').

  19. These images cover topics ranging from air and space to 
  20. science, technology, history, and even current events.  These 
  21. images are designed to give the user who cannot come to 
  22. Washington, the opportunity to see and learn about many of 
  23. the Smithsonian's most popular and important objects and 
  24. exhibits.

  26. These images cover a broad spectrum of interests which we 
  27. hope will interest our electronic audience.  Here we are able 
  28. to present photographs from many of our museums on the Mall 
  29. in Washington, D.C. plus other Smithsonian bureaus such as 
  30. the National Zoo and the Smithsonian Astrophysical 
  31. Observatory.

  33. Starting with some of the best of our photography, all 
  34. scanning and image preparation is done in our Electronic 
  35. Imaging Laboratory to insure each file meets our standards.  
  36. In addition to the image, extensive captions are often 
  37. included with each image as part of our mission for the 
  38. 'increase and diffusion of knowledge.'
